Savings Bonds Redeeming

Question: Savings Bonds sorta damaged after flooding. Can they still be redeemed?
I had some Savings Bonds in a fire-proof safe (oh the irony) and the flooding of last week damged the bonds. They are still readable, their issue date, beneficiary, and bond number are clearly visible. The problem is that they have some water stains and one sorta tore down the middle. Can they still be redeemed?
Answer: absolutely – you can send the bond numbers to the treasury and they’ll re-issue your bonds – that would be better than keeping water stained (and potentially mold growing) bonds around.

Question: Where do I enter a EE US Savings Bond amount on form 8815?
My bond has a redemption value that increased by $1,300.00. On what line of this form would I put this amount?
Answer: If your EE Bond interest qualifies for an exclusion for higher education expenses, use Form 8815 to figure the amount of the exclusion.
Form 8815 Line 5 is for the total proceeds of the bond. Line 6 is for the interest of $1,300.
