Savings Bonds Cost

Question: Series E/EE Savings Bonds – what is the difference between paper and electronic bonds?
I have read that the paper bond costs half of face value, but the electronic bond costs the actual face value. Which is the better investment? And does the interest accrue the same way?
Answer: http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ebonds/res_e_bonds.htm
Both the paper and electronic EE bonds earn the same fixed interest rate (currently 0.70%).
Example:
If you buy a $50.00 paper EE bond you pay 1/2 face value so you start out earning interest on $25.00.
If you buy a $50.00 electronic EE bond you pay full face value so you start out earning interest on $50.00.

Us Savings Bonds Search

Question: How do you find/claim a savings bond if you have no ‘proof’ & don’t want to pay someone else to find it- yet?
I know they existed… Grandma can’t remember the banks but we know what state… neither of us accurate on the dates; maybe close on the year… found a couple ‘search’ sites, but they want $$… I don’t have that otherwise I probably wouldn’t be worried about an old savings bond or two!! Just curious!
Answer: Hi MeMyself&I, I’m the Savings Bond Guru from SavingsBonds.com – I hope I can help you with your question.
I’ll bet one of the web sites you went to was ours, and its ok if you don’t want to pay for our Lost Bond Recovery Service.
Here’s what you can do to get your Savings Bonds replaced. Go to the Government’s Savings bond site, in the forms pages, and find PDF 1048 “Request to Reissue Lost, Stolen or Destroyed Savings Bonds“. (I’ve included a link to the Gov’s website below).
It wasn’t very clear if you’re trying to find the bonds for your grandmother or for yourself, but here’s some tips on the information you’ll need for the forms:
- Social Security Number of the person you’re searching for
- Only one person can be searched on per form
- When it asks for Dates, simply provide a Range of Years you think they were issued
- In the details/info for the bonds, include the SSN as well as your Address at the time the bonds were issued
I hope this has been helpful! Good Luck!
