Savings Bonds Where To Redeem

Question: Where do I send Series EE Savings Bonds to be redeemed?

I am executor for an estate. The bonds are in the name of the deceased only.

Answer: You do not have to send Savings Bonds to redeem them. Savings Bonds can be redeemed at the bank. Any bank. Make sure to bring sufficient documentation that the person is deceased and that you are the executor of the estate. It would be best to take the bonds to the bank where the estate’s bank account is located, so that the funds can be deposited there immediately and there is no need to carry the money from one bank to another.

Question: Savings Bonds sorta damaged after flooding. Can they still be redeemed?

I had some Savings Bonds in a fire-proof safe (oh the irony) and the flooding of last week damged the bonds. They are still readable, their issue date, beneficiary, and bond number are clearly visible. The problem is that they have some water stains and one sorta tore down the middle. Can they still be redeemed?

Answer: absolutely – you can send the bond numbers to the treasury and they’ll re-issue your bonds – that would be better than keeping water stained (and potentially mold growing) bonds around.
