Savings Bonds By Mail

Question: Question regarding Savings Bonds?

I won a $200 savings bond. What do I do now? Supposibly I’m getting it by the mail. Can I cash it? What happens if I cash it? How much interest does it earn?
I don’t really want to wait. Is the value of the bond $200 or less?

Answer: Fred

It does depend on the bind, but it is probably an EE bond. That being the case the face value of the Bond is $200 at maturity, many years from now. The bond is bought at a discount, and was purchased at a cost of $100.

Your bond is worth $100, and can be cashed approximately 90 days to 6 months from the date it was issued. The interest is insignificant, but you will be paid interest from the date of issue to the date of its cashing.

The time line for Cashing Savings Bonds may have changed you can find the info at your bank or on line.
