Question: Is it worth it to buy US Savings Bonds?

With the economy where it is right now, is anything guaranteed by the government worth buying?

I’m about to have a new nephew and I’d like to purchase some Savings Bonds, like my grandparents did when I was a kid.

What are people’s thoughts on whether or not US Savings Bonds will actually pay out as they’re supposed to?
Just to clarify, I’m questioning the reliability of the United States Government garunteeing these Savings Bonds.

Since a bond is basically a loan, I don’t want the government to default on it, or pay me back with currency so inflated it’s worthless.

Answer: i guess it wouldn’t hurt
